What are YOU going to be on Friday night, before the Running with the Bears race?
Hopefully joining us for packet pickup (opens at 4:00pm), a catered dinner (no spaghetti feed here, check out the menu!!), and a special guest speaker -podcaster Diz Runs.
Denny was supposed to be the Running with the Bears special guest speaker in 2015. It didn’t happen. It will this year!! Here is the whole story, straight from the Diz Runs man himself 🙂
The story starts last spring (April/May maybe?), when I got a notice on twitter that Running with the Bears was now following me. I reached out to thank you guys for the follow, as I usually do, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek said that if you ever wanted a speaker for your event I might be available. At that point, speaking was something I knew that I wanted to do, but really hadn’t done yet, and didn’t know where to begin. To my (somewhat) surprise, I got a message back saying you might be interested. After a little back and forth, we set it up for me to come speak last year (2015). But for whatever reason, it wasn’t meant to be.
Not knowing any better, I was planning on arriving in Greenville on Friday afternoon (to speak that night) and then participate in the race the following morning. When I got to the airport that morning, I found out that my flight had been canceled. (Lesson learned, I’ll be coming a day or two early this year!) Thankfully, you guys are a forgiving bunch and you offered me the opportunity to make it up to you guys this year.
On August 19th, at the Running with the Bears pre-race dinner, I’ll be talking about the reasons that we run. It’s something that sounds pretty simple and straightforward on the surface, but as you start to honestly peel back the layers, the answer to why you run becomes more and more personal.
Over the course of over 200 interviews for my podcast, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to a variety of runners- from pros/elites, to recreationally competitive runners, to newbies). I’ll be boiling down those conversations to the themes that keep us continuing to log more miles. At the end of the day, the reason that each of us runs is deeply personal. I hope to challenge those that are listening to my presentation to really look deep inside themselves to find their reason if that is something that they’ve never done before.
There are a couple of reasons why I picked Running with the Bears. One, that is purely selfish, is that it’s easier to get more speaking opportunities once you’ve already spoken somewhere! So when yall said yes, I was coming! (Until my flight got canceled, of course!) That reason is still valid this year. Another reason is that I’m trying to run a marathon in every state, and I haven’t run California yet. I also appreciate that RWTB is what y’all say it is, a small race that benefits a good cause. If I can support that, I’m happy too.
The podcast has, arguably, the worst title in all of iTunes! The actual title of the show is “The Diz Runs With…” podcast, which tells you next to nothing about the show to someone that happens to stumble upon the show somewhere. However, the title does make sense with a little explanation. My nickname since college is Diz, and when I started my blog back in 2012 or so, I simply titled it Diz Runs as the plan was to somewhat chronicle my running journey (which I had no idea would go the way that it did, but that’s a story for another day!). When I decided to launch the podcast in 2014, I wanted it to be a very casual conversation with other runners that covers “running, life, and everything in between” in a very loosy-goosy manner, similar to the conversations that I’ve had with other runners over the years.
So, the idea of the show is that I’m out for a run with my guests, and the podcast is just the natural conversation that takes place over a few easy miles. The title is supposed to be a reference to who I’m running/chatting with that day. It kind of makes sense with an explanation, and I really should come up with a better title, but after 260+ episodes I almost wonder what the point would be!
We can’t wait to meet you, Diz!!
