Returning to the Running with the Bears Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K for the fourth year in a row is Aid Station #2, the Indian Valley Youth Summit (IVYS)! This is also the turnaround point for the 10K runners. IVYS began in January of 2012 in response to the epidemic of depression and suicide among youth in the rural, close-knit cluster of communities that comprise the Indian Valley. The Youth Summit is run by a small group of volunteers who seek to nurture resilience in youth and improve communication between parents and community services and organizations. The IVYS offers suicide prevention classes, as well as a mentoring program and activities for youth, to give them confidence and a chance to connect with people in their community. They also co-produce the annual Kids Fest event, and they recently obtained a local grant which enabled them to produce Parent Community Resource guide (which are magnets to provide access to all of the important phone numbers in the county.)
It’s a BIRD! It’s a PLANE! It’s INDIAN VALLEY YOUTH SUMMIT!!! At aid station #2 you will be welcomed and supported by your favorite superheroes, because athletes are their superheroes!
If the IVYS wins one of the categories (best food, spirit, or theme), they will use the money to do another workshop for teens on suicide prevention, and to buy supplies for their after school activity class for sewing, baking, cooking, and babysitting.
